Roadtrip | Landscape
“Every day I am still looking for God, and I am still finding him everywhere.”
— Mary Oliver
I have always been drawn to ordinary things. Some daisies in a jar. A person on the back of a truck. A roadside stall. The sun on fields.
The things that are so familiar we barely notice them — until, for some reason, we do.
This year was a year full of travel for us, mostly around Southern Africa. I have always wished that I would sketch as I went, but I am not very good at sketching when I travel. There is too much to take in. New places, new people, unfamiliar landscapes. I feel a little overwhelmed by it all. So, I found that I took photographs instead. Hundreds of them. Mostly quick, ordinary, blurry, bad photographs of things that caught my eye. When I got home and I looked through them, what surprised me was that I didn’t just remember what I had seen. I remembered how I had felt. A fleeting moment, a particular light, a person, a colour, something I couldn’t quite explain — but something that had made me stop.
The paintings in this exhibition began to flow from there. I realised that perhaps I am not really interested in painting places or things,
rather I am interested in those small moments of connection — the instant when something ordinary suddenly feels worth noticing.
ROADTRIP is a collection of those moments. It is less about the destination than the looking. About paying attention. About the unexpected beauty of the everyday, and the little things that, for a moment, make us stop and see the world differently. About connection.Perhaps that is what I have been painting all along.
